The calendar said Monza. Zandvoort settled it two weeks early.
Flynt Schuring won the seventh race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season on Sunday 23 August, and with it the championship. The 20-year-old Dutch Porsche Junior did it at home, on the 4.259-kilometre circuit that hosts the Dutch Grand Prix, in front of his family. One year after taking the Rookie title.
He started second and spent the opening phase behind pole-sitter Jaap van Lagen. Shortly after a safety car period, the Martinet by Alméras veteran made a small mistake. Schuring took the place and then simply drove away: just under seven seconds clear after 17 laps.
Van Lagen held second. Robert de Haan, second in the standings, finished third, which ends his mathematical chance at Monza. Theo Oeverhaus and Wouter Boerekamps crossed the line fourth and fifth but lost those positions to post-race time penalties.
The reshuffle promoted Jack Young to fourth. Driving for the Italian Target squad, the Briton claimed his first Rookie class win ahead of compatriot Liam McNeilly (Ombra Racing) and Brazilian Matheus Ferreira (Team GP Elite). Luxembourg’s Chester Kieffer (Schumacher CLRT) still leads the Rookie championship. Marcus Amand, the other Porsche Junior, ran with the chasing group for most of the race before a spin dropped him back late on.
« I’m lost for words, » Schuring said. « Of course, I’d always dreamed of winning the Supercup. But to win the title at my home race, in front of my whole family, far exceeds that dream. I’d say today was one of my best races ever. »
Saturday belonged to a French rookie
Race six, the day before, produced a first of its own. Paul Cauhaupé, 21, a rookie at Martinet by Alméras, scored his maiden Supercup win and became the fifth different winner of the season. The grid held 32 Porsche 911 Cup cars, the 992.2-generation racer built on the road model whose track record is covered here in French.
Boerekamps led from pole. On lap three, contact with van Lagen pushed him off line as light rain began falling. Cauhaupé went through. The race was then stopped after a car slid off and damaged a barrier. Once repairs were done, the field restarted behind the safety car, and the Frenchman held on to the flag. Van Lagen finished around two and a half seconds back, Schuring third. Boerekamps picked up a puncture, pitted for a tyre and went on to set the fastest lap. Amand returned to the pits after a collision and could not rejoin. The stewards were still working long after the chequered flag.
« I got off to a bit of a slow start, » Cauhaupé said. « That allowed Jaap van Lagen to overtake me even before the first corner. When Jaap and Wouter Boerekamps then strayed from the ideal line whilst battling it out, I seized the opportunity. Fortunately, my second start behind the safety car was perfect. »
Villeneuve closes his guest season
Zandvoort also ended Jacques Villeneuve’s run as a Supercup guest driver. The 1997 Formula 1 World Champion contested six races in the VIP car entered by Porsche Motorsport under number 911, painted in his own helmet livery. The series has long traded on that kind of cross-generation cameo, a thread that runs through Porsche’s racing heritage (French-language article).
« The level in the Supercup is very high, » the Canadian said. « I struggled in qualifying and therefore always had to start from the back of the grid. My pace in the races was good, but by then it was too late. The Supercup family gave me an extremely warm welcome. I really enjoyed this season. »
Oliver Schwab, Project Manager of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, called Schuring a worthy champion with three wins from seven races so far. Two titles are still open, the Rookie classification and the Teams’ championship. Both go to Monza on 4 to 6 September, supporting the Italian Grand Prix, a week after Porsche wrapped up its Formula E season with a second Wehrlein title.
